MCubed is an innovative and exciting approach for bringing students up to grade level in math while practicing life skills in a socially, emotionally safe afterschool setting. Targeted students are those facing a variety of ACE’s (Adverse Childhood Experiences). Learning the ‘hard skills’ of math dovetails well with training in the ‘soft skills’ needed for all areas of their lives. This group will meet once per week for two hours. In the first – confidential – hour, an NJH social worker will focus on mental health and the growth mindset, practicing self-regulating behavior, learning to make positive connections with others, and developing self-esteem. The second hour, math curriculum support with two math teachers, will also reinforce the growth mindset (the important idea that trying may not lead directly to success, but always leads to growth and learning).
