Enhancing Teen Literacy via eBooks

Teen Literacy Grant PresentationHopkins high school and junior high students will have 24/7 on-line access to 900 titles of popular fiction and non-fiction e-books. Reading for pleasure has been proven to increase comprehension and literacy, and this purchase of new titles for the media collection will have great appeal in our teens’ digital world.

Books can be downloaded onto the iPads used by every 7th grader as well as e-book readers, MP3 players, and portable devices such as smart phones. The books will ‘expire’ at the end of the check-out period.

Based on students’ interests, titles will be chosen (and rotated in and out) by the media specialists at the three schools. Over 300,000 titles are currently available on the web-based service, Overdrive. After initial funding by HEF, the annual subscription fee will funded by the district.
