Gender Sexuality Alliance AF photo 2 grants 2018Hopkins Education Foundation (HEF), through its Awesome Fund, has awarded a $365 grant to the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA), a social activism group that works to promote an understanding of, and educate the student body in, LGBTQ+ issues. GSA has been an established club at Hopkins High School for more than ten years. The GSA will use the funds to register for the 14th Annual QueerQuest (Q-Quest) Youth Festival and Conference in November, an event presented by the MN School Outreach Coalition. Several GSA members will attend this gathering of students, described as ‘an event for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer & Allied youth to participate in workshops (on topics including gender identity, coming out, and healthy dating) with hundreds of youth from across the metro and greater metro area’. GSA’s goals at the conference is to learn new ways to reach out, connect, and engage with people in the Hopkins Schools community, increase membership, and to speak with and listen to the stories of students both similar and different to one another. Sam Werner, GSA co-vice president, believes that Hopkins is very accepting of LGBTQ+ people. “What we have here at Hopkins is truly special,” he said, “and attending this conference can help share this acceptance.”
