This is a grant from The Awesome Fund, dedicated solely to student clubs and organizations, and funded by a generous Hopkins alumnus, a matching donation from his employer, and the family & friends of Ethan Lang.
Speedcubing is the brain sport of solving a variety of combination puzzles, the most famous being the 3x3x3 puzzle or Rubik’s Cube, as quickly as possible. For most puzzles, solving entails performing a series of moves that alters a scrambled puzzle into a state in which every face of the puzzle is a single, solid color. There are many different shapes and sizes of challenging puzzles to solve. Currently, there are six cubers in this new HHS club but given the popularity of the sport and Red Bull’s sponsorship of the Rubik’s Cube World Cup, the community of cubers will no doubt expand.
This Awesome Fund Grant will purchase a variety of cubes for the clubbers to practice with and enhance their skills. As they learn strategy together, they intend to host demos at HHS to engage potential new members, and envision competing at some point in World Cube Association (WCA) events in the Twin Cities.
