First graders sometimes need to move their bodies while learning and some are simply more productive when they keep moving. This high-level need for movement is not ‘fixed’ by redirection or intermittent breaks for physical activity; in fact, these interventions can be interpreted by young children as negative feedback.
This HEF grant to Juntos Spanish Immersion acknowledges different ways of learning by pairing pedal stools with standing desks – proven tools from Action Based Learning – to allow movement without distraction (to self or others). The goal here is to positively impact the motivation and self-esteem of students as they learn to self-motivate.
