As an innovative pilot alternative to traditional homework, Meadowbrook third graders will take home weekly tote bags filled with fun, interesting experiences for students to explore. These “home connection literacy packs” will expand students’ range of experiences and broaden background knowledge around a variety of topics, cultures, and points of view, including the fine arts, STEM and more. This new way of thinking about homework encourages students to see themselves as explorers, develop confidence in learning, and to view school in a different light. As the lab packs remove socio-economic barriers for those who may not be as steeped in extra-curricular adventures, they will strengthen the family/school connection for all, and help make those important connections between skills and real-world applications. Packs will be added as students express their interests and offer ideas.
