This Book of the Month Club is for all 850 Eisenhower K-6 students on the school’s three learning pathways: Community School, XinXing Academy and Juntos Spanish Immersion. The purchased books will be in English but teachers will translate for their K-2 Spanish and Chinese students. Each month, staff will read one school-wide book to students in their classrooms to foster conversation around – and a deeper understanding of – one of the ten attributes of a strong learner found in the IB* Primary Years Profile (PYP): a Well-Balanced, Caring, Communicator; an Inquiring, Knowledgeable, Open-Minded, Principled, Reflective, Risk-Taking, Thinker. Protagonists in the books represent the varied cultures and home lives of students, and the story lines focus on a single attribute per book.
The Book of the Month Club benefits the larger goal of fostering internationally minded young people who recognize the common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, and who help to create a better and more peaceful world.
*The IB (International Baccalaureate) focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development. The IB is a compilation of best practice and research over the last 50+ years from a range of international schools to create a relevant, engaging, challenging and significant educational framework for all children. The PYP Learner Profile represents the 10 attributes valued by IB World Schools, as listed above.
