Thanks to an HEF grant, Meadowbrook grades 3-5 are piloting the use of Fountas & Pinnell literacy intervention kits during the 2014-2015 school year for students needing Response to Intervention (RTI). RTI is a focused effort to eliminate achievement gaps and help students reach their full potential. This HEF Literacy Intervention grant at Meadowbrook will specifically target readers during important years when struggling students often plateau and fall further behind in reading skills.
These kits are designed to bring struggling readers to grade level and beyond in both vocabulary and comprehension. These exciting fiction and non-fiction books were developed by reading specialists to interest young readers. They are engaging and well-paced, featuring all races, genders, scientific fields and animal kingdoms. Educators have been delighted with students’ rapid success using this intervention.
The Fountas & Pinnell curriculum dovetails directly with current testing parameters, and as a pilot program, will be carefully measured against other current RTI approaches across the District.
