The QSA at Eisenhower Elementary was founded by 5th and 6th grade students requesting a safe place to talk, to learn more about their community or about themselves, and to foster compassion and understanding. Books can provide mirrors, windows and dreams, and
this HEF grant directly addresses a student-driven request for material in the school’s media center that respectfully represents all gender identities. More than 100 elementary-appropriate books will be purchased, written for and by queer people, teachers and families, and that span many different facets of the queer community. These are age-appropriate, accessible stories on multiple topics, including how queer kids figure out and navigate their identities. Titles include The Newspaper Pirates; Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag; They She He Me: Free to Be!; and I am Jazz.
